fuel-saving diesel engine pollution control systems

The particulate filter system-Peugeot Citroen:

The Particle Filter System (FAP), allows the engine of the Citroen C5 2.2 HDi, reduce by more than 95% of diesel particulate emissions.

This filter traps any unburned particles rejected by the engine, and ensures its combustion. The level of particulate emissions from HDi, already particularly low, due to the common rail direct injection, reached the limit of the measurable and goes far beyond the future environmental standards European Union. The FAP system reinforces the achievements of the Diesel engine in environmental protection.

FAP system, developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen group, was launched thanks to common rail HDi engine which, by its own principle of operation, to control the different phases combustion. Via motor control, the flexibility of common rail enables adjusting the temperature of exhaust gases through an afterburner, to direct the regeneration of the filter. So far, the filter regeneration by combustion filtered particle, was the biggest obstacle to the development of FAP car.

The technical solution adopted allows for effective regeneration, imperceptible to the driver, who has no impact at all on driving.

FAP System description

The particulate filter is a porous structure of silicon carbide, which captures particles in the exhaust gases. It is characterized by a large filtration efficiency and high particle retention capacity.

Consisting of

  • support associated with a pre-catalyst filter upstream sensors and control of temperature and pressure.

  • evolved program controls and engine controls HDi common rail leading the regeneration of the filter and the self-diagnosis: the heart of the system.

  • built a fuel additive and already integrated into the vehicle.

The principle of regeneration of the particulate filter.

regeneration burn is periodically accumulated particulates in the filter. Whenever there is oxygen combustion takes place when the temperature of the exhaust gases exceeds 550 ° C.

regeneration filters directed by the injection system common rail that activates multiple injections to bring the initial gas temperature (about 150 º C in urban traffic) to 450 º C at the outlet of the exhaust manifold.

This operation temperature increase takes place in two stages:

1. A post injection of fuel in the expansion phase produces an afterburner in the cylinder and leads to an increase in temperature of 200 º C to 250 º C.

2. An additional afterburner, generated by an oxidation catalyst placed on the filter, converts the unburned hydrocarbons in the postinjection consistent. Temperature 100 º C may increase further.

to achieve regeneration, the fuel enters Eolys (a composition based on glycerine), manufactured by the company Rhodia, natural low temperature combustion of the particles at 450 º C.

The leakage of exhaust gases is conducted continuously. Depending on the status of filter clogging, regeneration is involved in 400 or 500 km

To ensure efficiency, the filter is cleaned with water under pressure up to 80,000 km. at dealers in order to remove deposits of glycerine.

An environmental balance

The FAP system is part of the strategy to reduce pollutant emissions Citroën aims and PSA Peugeot Citroen. The system FAP HDi diesel engine provides an ecological advantage effectively completing their results determining intrinsic to the removal of particles and smoke.
